Taking a deep breath. This year, it's all a beautiful unknown

Ah, apartment living. A melting pot of personalities, all crammed together in a delightful

(or sometimes deafening) symphony of daily life. My neighbor, for example, seems to be living a life permanently set to "Olympic Kayaking Trials."

It all started subtly. A gentle whooshing sound, like wind rustling through leaves. Then, a rhythmic creaking, reminiscent of oars dipping into water. At first, I chalked it up to an overactive imagination. Maybe a new exercise routine involving a particularly enthusiastic rowing machine?

But then came the unmistakable sound of rushing water. A steady current gurgling, splashing, and occasionally punctuated by a triumphant "whoop!" that could only mean one thing: my upstairs neighbor was celebrating a virtual kayaking victory.

Now, my apartment isn't exactly a lakefront property. We're talking third floor, smack dab in the middle of the city. The closest body of water is a decorative fountain in the park two blocks down. So, the logical conclusion would be...well, there isn't a logical conclusion.

My days are filled with the soundtrack of a virtual regatta. The mornings begin with a flurry of "water whooshes" as my neighbor warms up for their virtual race. Afternoons bring the rhythmic "thunk-thunk" of the paddle, and evenings are reserved for victory celebrations (complete with more whooping and the occasional "first place!" declaration).

Honestly, I wouldn't mind so much if the apartment didn't creak and groan with every virtual stroke. It's like a live broadcast of their kayaking journey, complete with a wonky sound system and a floor that doubles as a wobbly boat.

Part of me admires their dedication. Here's someone who's found a way to stay active and chase their kayaking dreams, even in the confines of a city apartment. The other part? Well, the other part is starting to consider investing in a good pair of noise-canceling headphones.

Maybe one day, I'll gather the courage to knock on their door, or water LOL, and offer a friendly greeting. Who knows, they might even invite me to join them on their next virtual kayaking adventure (emphasis on "virtual"). After all, who wouldn't want to experience the thrill of conquering the rapids from the comfort of their living room – without the risk of a soggy phone or a very concerned landlord?
