Pure Moods: The Soundtrack to My 3 AM Infomercial Dreams

Ah, the 90s. A time of dial-up internet, slap bracelets, and infomercials that lulled you to sleep with the promise of a better tomorrow

(and a set of Ginsu knives). But for me, there was one infomercial that transcended the realm of selling – it became a bizarre, comforting part of my sleep routine. I'm talking, of course, about Pure Moods.

Those late nights, tossing and turning between homework deadlines and the thrill of unsupervised TV, often found me flipping through the channels in the wee hours. Inevitably, I'd land on the Pure Moods infomercial, a soothing montage of rolling waves and couples gazing into each other's eyes, all set to a soundtrack of smooth jazz and soaring vocals.

The narrator's voice, a silky baritone promising a "world where time drifts slowly," would wash over me. I wouldn't even register the specific moods being advertised – "Cafe Nouveau," "Steamy Romance," you name it. Instead, my brain would latch onto the script, memorizing it word by word.

"Imagine a world..." the voice would begin, and a calmness would settle over me. I'd start reciting along internally, a strange lullaby taking hold. "...where music carries you away..." My eyelids would grow heavy, the rhythm of the commercial merging with the hum of the television. "...experience Pure Moods, the perfect soundtrack for your way of life." By the time the narrator reached the multi-platinum collection boasting millions of hearts won, I'd be fast asleep.

Looking back, it's a hilarious image – a sleep-deprived teenager memorizing infomercial scripts. But for me, Pure Moods became an unintentional sleep aid. The predictability of the commercial, the soft music, the sheer absurdity of it all, created a strange sense of security, a familiar white noise that lulled me into slumber.

Of course, the 90s faded, the infomercials moved online, and my sleep patterns (hopefully) matured. But the memory of Pure Moods still brings a smile. It's a reminder of those simpler times, and the unexpected ways our brains find comfort in the most bizarre places. Who knew the soundtrack to my teenage insomnia would be a world of slow-drifting time and multi-platinum collections?
